Rebecca Lerner in Raleigh!

November 30th-December 2nd

Conquering Obstacles

Finding Comfort Even in Discomfort

During this workshop we will honor the lifework of B.K.S. Iyengar as this year marks his 100th birthday. During this fall session I am reading Mr. Iyengar’s book Light on Life to my students. To further our study throughout our weekend together, Rebecca Lerner will take us deeper into Chapter 2:  “Stability — The Physical Body (Asana).”  One of the sections is labeled “Pain: Find Comfort Even in Discomfort.” In the first sentence in this section Mr. Iyengar says, “Many people focus on the past or the future to avoid experiencing the present, often because the present is painful or difficult to endure." Rebecca will help us to use our pain as a teacher and to uncover the obstacles that can hold us back from doing more than we think.

Some quotes from this section of Light on Life

Since pain is inevitable asana is a laboratory in which we discover how to tolerate the pain that cannot be avoided

To get freedom you have to bear the pain

Practice is not just about pleasurable sensations. It is about our awareness and awareness leads us to notice and understand both the pleasure and the pain.

The challenge of yoga is to go beyond our limits -within reason

Asana practice is an opportunity to look at the obstacles in practice and life and discover how we can cope with them.

Rebecca is co-director of the Center for Well-Being in Lemont, PA. She has been practicing and teaching yoga since the 1970s and studies regularly in Pune, India, with the Iyengar family. She has mentored and trained teachers in the Iyengar tradition both in the US and abroad and has inspired students worldwide. Rebecca was just in Pune this past June and received a higher level of certification directly from Geeta Iyengar making her an Advanced Junior I certified teacher.

Attendance of the entire workshop is encouraged but not required. Priority will be given to students who register for the whole workshop. While this workshop is an All Levels workshop it is not appropriate for students that have never practiced Shoulder Stand(with 3 blankets and a strap) or Headstand at the wall. It is also not appropriate if you have a MAJOR medical or physical condition that will prevent you from doing poses. Students of varying experience and from different traditions are welcome!
